Boosting Reliability: How a Florida Hospital Solved Wastewater Pump Failures

Hospitals depend on seamless operations, as any system failure—even minor— could impact critical care. At a Florida hospital serving nearly 200 patients and operating day and night, persistent reliability issues in the wastewater lift station raised major concerns.

The hospital’s duplex lift station handles both sanitary wastewater and discharge from its laundry operations, creating a challenging environment filled with wipes, rags, and fibrous debris. Over time, these materials led to repeated clogging in the station’s existing 10 HP pumps. One pump ultimately failed, while the remaining unit struggled to maintain required performance levels. Frequent maintenance—requiring pumps to be pulled and manually cleaned—became the norm, increasing labor demands and risking operational disruption.

With no downtime window available, the hospital needed an immediate, dependable solution capable of satisfying a minimum flow rate of 400 gallons per minute (GPM) at 50 feet of head, while also complying with explosion-proof safety standards.

Custom Pump and Controls evaluated the application and recommended Tsurumi’s FM-certified 10 HP MYCZ 1000/4/100 chopper pump. Designed specifically for severe wastewater conditions, the MYCZ pump utilizes a robust chopping mechanism to process solids before they can cause blockages. The unit not only met the system requirements but exceeded them, delivering approximately 500 GPM.

The availability factor was equally essential. Tsurumi quickly confirmed in-stock inventory, enabling the replacement pump to be delivered within 4 business days. Installation was completed efficiently using a Flygt guide rail adapter, enabling seamless integration into the existing guide rail system without major modifications.

The benefits were immediate: The new chopper pump eliminated persistent clogging issues, significantly reducing maintenance needs. Since installation, the hospital has not needed to pull the pump for ragging or cleaning. Improved flow capacity also reduced daily run times, increasing overall system efficiency and lowering mechanical strain.

Encouraged by the performance, the hospital made the decision just weeks later to replace the second pump in the station with another MYCZ pump unit, fully standardizing the system.
