When Hurricane Irma tore through the Caribbean, it left widespread damage across the island of Tortola, located in the British Virgin Islands. Among the impacted properties was the Long Bay Hotel & Resort, a boutique oceanfront destination. The storm damaged critical infrastructure including the resort’s wastewater treatment system, which required a complete remodel.
To meet this challenge, Enereau, a wastewater treatment system supplier and Tsurumi Pump distributor, partnered with the resort to design a new wastewater treatment solution. The new facility needed to support the long-term operational and sustainability goals of the resort while fitting within the footprint of the previous facility. The island presented unique construction constraints in addition to a production requirement of up to 25,000 gallons per day of reuse quality water for landscape applications.
From the outset, several critical design requirements impacted the project. The British Virgin Islands face some of the highest electricity costs in the world, therefore energy efficiency was essential. Frequent power interruptions are not uncommon, and back-up power is often supplied from diesel generators. Longevity was equally important given the site’s coastal location and corrosive environment. With limited access to construction labor, the system needed to be modular and simple enough for installation by the resort’s own maintenance team.
Enereau’s solution centered on its nrPUR™ Membrane Filtration Module within a Membrane BioReactor (MBR). Existing basins from the resort’s previous Rotating Biological Contractor (RBC) system were repurposed as equalization tanks, helping to reduce capital costs. These were paired with vertical silo BioReactor tanks and a prefabricated membrane filtration module to create a compact, high-performance system.
Tsurumi Pump supported the project as a key equipment provider across multiple stages of wastewater treatment process. Tsurumi supplied cutter pumps for the lift station to handle solids, along with corrosion resistant VANCS™ pumps for both the equalization tank and MBR system. Aeration was further enhanced using Tsurumi’s TRN aerator mixer, contributing to efficient biological treatment.
This resulted in a high-performance wastewater treatment system that is tailored to the island’s operations. By combining Enereau’s modular design with Tsurumi’s pump and process equipment, the Long Bay Hotel & Resort now benefits from a consistent supply of reuse quality water, reduced operational costs, and a system built to withstand the challenges of its coastal environment.
